After the incredible success of Hip-Hop Karaoke's first Posse Cut Competition in 2013, we are returning with a second edition, in what hopes to be a long-standing annual Toronto hip-hop tradition. Last year over twenty talented duos, trios, and quartets graced the stage of Revival Bar and gave it their best in a battle of furious rhymes and dance moves in front of a frenzied capacity crowd. At the end of it all, two duos, both comprised of HHK veterans, Kryptonite + Samurai and Nico B + The Trail, ended up tying for the coveted gold medal spot. On June 20th, they return to defend their titles.
As a special bonus, this year's Posse Cut champions will be given the honour of rapping alongside Wonder Mike and Master Gee, once of the Sugarhill Gang live on stage! "Rapper's Delight" will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary as hip-hop's first ground-breaking and chart-topping single at Harbourfront Centre on June 27th, along with Maestro Fresh-Wes and Rap City's Michael Williams.
This year, Hip-Hop Karaoke welcomes the Freedom Writers to judge participants, as well as deliver a floor-shaking performance. A six-man collective (consisting of Adam Bomb, Tona, Frankie Payne, Theo 3, Progress, and Big Sproxx), the Freedom Writers are a Toronto hip-hop staple, who have shared the stage with such greats as Rakim and Raekwon. Whether together or solo, they have always delivered lyrical testaments towards truth, justice, social change, and revolution.
Throw away any preconceived notion you may have of a stereotypical karaoke night — this is not "Ice Ice Baby" over a stripped down muzak beat in the back of the bar, complete with bouncing ball and cornball graphics. Hip-Hop Karaoke is the prime opportunity for closet MCs to finally grab the mic and bust their favourite raps live on stage with an accompanying DJ and a cheering, enthusiastic audience. Using all original instrumentals we provide hundreds of classic jams for everyone to flex their lyrical skill, from the seasoned hip-hop veteran to the casual fan.
Launched in December 2004, Hip-Hop Karaoke was fittingly born in New York City by founders J. New, DJ Wex and Digs. The night instantly caught on and rapidly gained momentum receiving praise from media outlets such as Spin, XXL, Urb, Village Voice, New York Post and Vibe. Still going extremely strong, Hip-Hop Karaoke NYC has had legendary attendees such as Big Daddy Kane and Diamond D as well as spawning chapters in London, Brighton, Bristol and Iceland.
Never Forgive Action is very proud to bring you the official Toronto edition of Hip-Hop Karaoke. Focusing on a feel-good, no attitude vibe where the emphasis is placed on having fun, Hip-Hop Karaoke Toronto follows in the footsteps of its New York City sister and delivers a platform for Toronto's hip-hop fans to shine. HHK has been featured in numerous publications such as Maclean's, National Post, Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, Now Magazine, Eye Weekly as well as television spotlights on MuchMusic and The New Music. Past special performances have included Naughty By Nature, Phife Dawg (A Tribe Called Quest), Masta Ace, The Beatnuts, Black Moon, Lords of the Underground, Maestro Fresh Wes, Jeru The Damaja, Lord Finesse, Saukrates, Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Das EFX, Michie Mee, Chip Fu (Fu-Schnickens), R.A. the Rugged Man, Danko Jones, D-sisive, and more!
